Can I Use a Pet Nail Clipper for My Dog?

    by September 27, 2020
    written by

Trimming your furry pet’s nails is an important grooming task that helps it stay healthy and happy. When you fail to do this, your dog’s nails will grow longer. This may cause problems because a dog that runs around on different surfaces can wear down its nails. Even so, many dogs spend time indoors. This should imply that their claws are not trimmed often; it may lead to longer in-grown nails, something that isn’t pleasing to your couches and furniture.

The basic composition of your dog’s claws

What is the goal of trimming the nails of your dog? What is the right length? Some dogs are shown with short nails such that they cannot be seen. Others are shown with long nails.

But did you know that there is a common rule of thumb dictating that when your dog is standing, its nails should not be in contact with the surface it is stepping on?

Secondly, when your dog is approaching and can hear the nails tap the surface, then the nails are too long and should be clipped.

The claws of your dog are made of keratin, which is a tough protein. They are also way different from the human nails in that they have two layers. Unlike you, a dog’s claws have unguis, which is an outer layer that covers keratin. The unguis gives the claws its curly look.

    Trimming tips

If your dog has long claws, they might get torn off as the dog goes about its daily activities. The ad news is, this might result in a precarious injury that may need instant veterinary care.

Longer nails may also make it challenging for your dog to walk comfortably. The pressure exerted on the floor can cause discomfort to your furry friend. So, here is what to do when you are ready to clip off those claws.

    • The first thing you should do if your dog is not used to is to ensure that they feel safe with the clipping.
    • To achieve this, you can introduce your pet to a clipper and get your friend used to the new life routine.
    • Now that it is time to trim your dog’s claws, you should hold the nail clipper at about 45 degrees angle then clip every nail.
    • Do this carefully so that you do not clip your dog’s skin (pink part) accidentally.
    • Lastly, remember to reward your dog after trimmingits claws. That way, your friend will associate that experience with positivity, thereby reducing fear.

How often should you trim your dog’s claws?

If your dog often walks on a soft surface, it may be challenging to control the length of its claws. If it is used to walking on hard ground, on the other hand, it may be easier.

The following elements also determine dog trimming needs:

    • The breed of your dog
    • The daily activities of your dog

    Final Thoughts

Dogs do not like their nails trimmed. But you have to do it to maintain their physical health. To be successful in this, you should start trimming your dog’s nails at a tender age. That way, they will become used to the idea of having their claws trimmed.
